A mild winter, weeks of dryness and heat – under these circumstances, it does not take much to trigger a forest fire. The soil, thickets and undergrowth provide plenty of flammable material. Once kindled, the fire spreads rapidly in all directions. If the trees are in flames right up to the tree-top, a fire is capable of skipping even rivers and lakes. Such a crown fire is difficult to combat.
